Do you like books? Do you have friends who like books?
Good news. This fall, Mermaid Books will be making our space available to existing clubs and running some new clubs of our own. Here’s the deal.
Info for existing book clubs
If you’re looking for a fun new space to host your monthly book club, look no further. Starting in September we’ll welcome clubs who’d like to gather in our cozy store on weekday evenings between 6:30 and 9pm. Book club blocks will run for two hours, for a rental fee of $50. Interested clubs should email bookclubs@mermaidbooksct.com for additional details and to reserve a slot.
We’ll also be registering book clubs who’d like to participate in our Book Club Discount Program. It’s easy: Register your club with us by emailing bookclubs@mermaidbooksct.com with the name of your group, and the neighborhood you’re based in. Let us know what you’re reading each month, how many books your group needs, and the names of the members who need them, and we’ll fulfill your order. Note that there’s no obligation to buy books for your club to be registered — we know people get their book club books in a variety of ways! But folks in the clubs that register with us who do wish to buy their books qualify for our discount.
We’ll be posting a roster of participating clubs at our cash wrap, so you can see and be inspired by what other clubs nearby are reading.
But wait, there’s more!
Drumroll, please! This fall, Mermaid Books will offer four of our own book clubs. To ensure rich conversation and an overall good hang, groups will be limited to 15 participants. Groups will begin to meet in early October. We’ll announce the books in late August, early September.
Participants of Mermaid book clubs must purchase their group’s assigned book through the bookstore. Physical books can be purchased in person at a 10% discount — but we’ll also honor audiobook purchases made on our Libro.fm page, or ebook or book purchases made when you visit our Bookshop.org storefont. (If you choose Libro or Bookshop, just email us your receipt at bookclubs@mermaidbooksct.com, so we can note your purchase. Note that our 10% book club discount doesn’t extend to books purchased via those channels.)
Are you excited? We are! Here’s what we’ll be offering this season:

Thrills and Chills
Unputdownable psychological suspense, keep-you-guessing whodunits, cozy mysteries — stories with twists and turns will be the focus of this club. Meetup info to come.

All About Love
For readers who swoon over meet-cute comedies, heartstring-tugging dramas and romance novels with spice. Meetup info to come.

Best in Show
Literati and literati wannabes, hi, this one’s for you. This group will tackle meaty literary must-reads, from awards season darlings and beloved classics to new releases getting good critical buzz. Meetup info to come.

This Book Is Dangerous
READ BANNED BOOKS! That’s our mantra at Mermaid and that’s the call to action for this club, which will select “dangerous” books, in defiance of the Thought Police. Meetup info to come.
